Are Dental Implants Right for You?

A confident smile and unabashed laughter are just a small component of what dental implants provide to those who have them placed in lieu of missing teeth. While dentures and bridges are an acceptable solution for many Calgary men and women, implants have a number of benefits over other dental treatments.

How dental implants work

Unlike bridges and dentures, which rest over the gum line, dental implants are secured directly to the jawbone. Titanium posts inserted into the gum function similarly to a natural tooth root by securing the prosthetic tooth to the jawbone. This prevents the bone resorption process and keeps the structure of the patient’s jaw intact. In addition, the artificial teeth will not move or slip in the mouth leading to better eating and speaking ability.

Is the procedure painful?

The process of placing dental implants is reported by our Calgary patients at Arbour Lake Dental Care as being less painful than other common dental procedures such as tooth extractions and dental fillings. A local anaesthetic is typically used to numb the area and afterwards any discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Who might benefit from dental implants?

Dental implants are successful in about 98 per cent of all cases. Anyone who has lost one or more teeth could potentially benefit from dental implants. However, not every individual is a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants will likely work for you if:

  • Your gums are healthy
  • Your jawbone is intact
  • Your oral health meets the minimum standards for wellness
  • Your overall health is generally good
  • You’re not a heavy smoker

Lifespan of a dental implant

With proper care, including daily brushing and flossing as well as regular cleanings, your dental implant should last a lifetime. Occasionally, adjustments may be required and in some cases the crown needs to be replaced after 15 or more years.

Other things to know

Unlike other dental prosthetics, implants stay in your mouth at all times, with no need for adhesives or additional cleaning beyond what you normally do to maintain your oral health. Furthermore, they allow you to maintain your natural teeth without subjecting them to with the filing that normally accompanies bridges or partial dentures. Finally, it’s worth noting that dental implants are aesthetically pleasing and can be coloured and designed to blend in seamlessly with your remaining teeth.
