Before scheduling your appointment with Arbour Lake Dental Care, take a moment to read through some common questions people have about Invisalign® in Calgary.
How long will the treatment last?
Treatment length will vary from case to case. On average, treatment lasts around 12 months for adults. However, treatment may be shorter or longer depending on the severity of your case.
How often must I wear my aligners?
Aligners have been found to be most effective when worn between 20-22 hours a day. It is recommended that aligners only be removed when eating, brushing and flossing.
How often will I need to visit the dentist during the treatment?
During your Invisalign® treatment, expect to visit your doctor every 4-6 weeks. Consistent appointments are necessary to ensure that your treatment is moving forward as planned.
Will wearing Invisalign® affect my speech?
As with other orthodontic treatments, it is possible to experience a short-term impairment of speech. It is not uncommon for new patients to speak with a slight lisp for a couple of days. Once your tongue gets used to the presence of the aligner, your speech should return to normal.
Can I play sports with the retainer in?
You may continue to play sports and participate in other athletic activities during treatment. However, it is recommended you remove the aligners during strenuous physical activity, especially where there is risk of contact to the head and mouth. A blow to your mouth with the aligners in can cause serious damage.
Are there restrictions to what I can eat while in treatment?
Since it is recommended the aligners be worn for 20-22 hours a day, there are no restrictions to what you can eat during treatment. Unlike traditional braces, the aligners can be removed while eating. Make sure to brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners to maintain proper dental hygiene.
How long does a retainer need to be worn after my treatment is complete?
The length of time a retainer needs to be worn full-time depends on the severity of your case. On average, a retainer will need to be worn full-time for 6-12 months after Invisalign® treatment. After this period, retainers should be worn at night moving forward to prevent teeth from moving back toward their original position.
